U.S. Navy Naval Academy Short Range Battle Practice Medal service ribbon. Also known as the "Great Guns Medal" or "Excellence With Great Guns Medal". This is a recently made ribbon intended for museum displays, and as a filler for collections.
Approved by the Secretary of the Navy on 11 January 1934. The medal was created to recognize First and Third Class Midshipmen of the Naval Academy who had been members of gun crews that had been awarded the Navy "E" when their ships fired in annual summer cruise competitions. The medal could only be worn while the recipient was at the Naval Academy. Discontinued in 1944 after an estimated 600 had been awarded.
