Organized in 1861, the famed Irish Brigade of the Army of the Potomac fought with honor and distinction in every major battle in the east, from 1st Bull Run through Appomattox, losing thousands of men.
This medal is a reproduction of that presented to Brigadier-General Thomas Francis Meagher (pronounced Marr), the first commander of the Brigade, by the grateful citizens of New York at a dinner held in his honor on June 25, 1863 at the Astor House. The Latin inscription translates to read,
Boldness in Dangers and Trust in Heaven

The original ribbon is red, white and blue, with green edges but has been changed to adhere to the current US Army Heraldry standard, whereby the stripes which appear on the ribbons of newly authorized United States Army medals, are symmetrical.
